Highlights of Peru - Inti Raymi Festival Special Departure & the Amazon add-on

Peru's spectacular Inti Raymi, means Festival of the Sun and dates back to the Inca times to guarantee fine harvests. The annual celebrations take place in the ruins of the Sacsayhuaman fortress overlooking Cuzco. The highlight is June 24 when the Sapa Inca calls for the sun's blessings in front of the Santo Domingo church. He is then carried on a golden throne through flower bedecked streets to the fortress, attended by high priests, court officials and noblemen, dressed in all their finery, to the accompaniment of music, prayers and dancing. Speeches and rituals follow and, at sunset, straw bales are set alight for the crowds to dance around, before the procession returns for the final blessing in the square.
